I wrote all of these for the [livejournal.com profile] femslash100  community on LJ many years ago, in an attempt to give my OTP (and by extension, the series itself) a bit more exposure than what I normally saw out there. Until now I mostly forgot about these after I wrote them, but now I feel I can give them a good showing here...

I've just got the local electronics store, a Comet, on the phone to me today. I've managed to score my first actual job interview! Right now I'm doing some research, in order to show the recruiters that I am able to take on the job, and I know what kind of animal the store is about. But still, this is my first shot at actually earning myself an actual salary! I have to get ready for it!

And I've also just finished the first season of Babylon 5, after viewing almost one disc every day. I think Londo Mollari is a brilliant character, funny and tragic in places, and I now have a habit of thinking in his voice, partly due to the fact that one of my Nanowrimo novel's characters is partly inspired by Londo. I'm also rather inspired by how the series shows space combat, by mostly adhering to a model of space flight that is reasonably close to real life. so now, alongside me trying to download and watch episodes of SG-1, I'm also waiting for my next payment to get Babylon 5 Season 2 on DVD. Now if only SG-1 were as easy to find on DVD as Babylon 5 is...

I suppose that the first thing that I should talk about is Nanowrimo. Specifically, that I am participating. It's actually been a lot easier on me than I had thought, mostly because I am also in November's One Month Challenge at 750words.com, which means that I pretty much have to write at least 750 words every day. I was hoping that the site would have had a feature that was mentioned in their blog, where they told you when you reached the Nanowrimo daily average of 1667 words.

However, it hasn't stopped me in the slightest: I now have 32,845 words, which means that I'm almost over half the way to the word count target. The problem is, who do I show it to when I'm finished. It's an Urusei Yatsura fanfic, but it's more like the fanfic to a bloated crossover of UY, Ikkitousen, Ranma 1/2, Harry Potter and Stargate SG-1... And almost none of the characters in those series appear in this story at all! I suppose that anyone who has any knowledge of any of those series could have a look at it, if just to help me find errors in spelling or continuity.

In other news, I have bought the first season of Babylon 5 on DVd, and I'm currently watching through it now. Londo Mollari is already my favourite character. I'm also beginning on my Macross boxset, just to get my fill of space opera...

Two threads for the Anime Addventure.
  • Obnoxious Sentimental Princesses - Yes, I'm still working on this. My envisioning for this story is spreading out so far that it's spanning generations at this point in time. Maybe I could put the sequels in AO3 or fanfic.net...
  • The Emperor's Army: The Chosen Men - An offshoot of one of Gorgo's most recent Addventure threads, this time dealing with his favourite whipping boys, the Church of Lum. The current mindset that I have for this Addventure thread is Sharpe's Rifles on another planet.
A novel set in an alternate present where magic and Final Fantasy style summoned creatures exist alongside current day technology. The story follows a mercenary Air Force on a mission assisting a feudal war.

An indie game that I'm planning, using the Unity game maker to develop, based around a return to Starfox-style arcade space shooters, in a very cartoony fashion.

And then there's the TEFL course that I'm currently studying, and the upcoming trip to Japan, where I might just be able to get a job there...

Point the first: I've bought "Helena" by My Chemical Romance. No real reason, apart from that it followed me listening to a dramatic reading of My Immortal, and I liked the song anyway, as I find it to be a murder ballad on cocaine. I'd say that this would be concerning to my credibility as a rock fan, but considering I'm also a big fan of Meat Loaf (or Jim Steinman, really) AND Demons and Wizards I hardly think I have any right now.

Point the second: I can't get over the new look AFI have. Alright, the music in Crash Love isn't THAT different from Decemberunderground, and I like the album. But I swear that when I watched the video for "Medicate", I was convinced that the lead singer wasn't Davey Havok, and that he was lip syncing to the music. Are they really trying to get away from the "gothic" look? It just baffles me.

Point the last: I feel like I should take my idea of Obnoxious Sentimental Princesses and simply write a fanfic to be placed on FF.net or AO3. I can just start with writing my version of what the previous writer wrote for openers, and then move on to where I was planning to take the storyline. I really want to do this for two reasons: first, I feel that the Anime Addventure is a really troublesome website for writing fanfic; and two, I'm worried that if I stay writing for the Addventure, the original writer of the thread might try to interfer with my posts, writing his own posts on my thread and such... I dunno if I really should, but if worst comes to worst, I'll publish it elsewhere, away from the Addventure.

As an anime fan, I still have an interest in a lot of stuff coming from the land of the rising sun. So when fansubbing really took off and anime could be downloaded, I was pretty happy, until I discovered that it coincided with the moe boom, and that a lot of the anime out was mostly shounen, or harem anime based on erotic games.

So, along with there still being a bit of a recession going on, and my apparent inability to do anything but surf the net and eat, I haven't actually been doing much in anime watching. I'm trying to correct this, but I still haven't really cracked into any of the anime DVDs that I bought at Minamicon this past March. Why? I don't know!

[personal profile] ilthit has finished her commission for me, and after I'm done with an essay on postmodernism on film, I should try and force myself to write something. Hopefully I'll be able to actually see through it to the end...

You know what?

This thread here is the summation of everything I hate about this guy's writings. Take a look, and you'd see why I say that.

Argh!

Some time ago I talked about "Urusei Yatsura: the Senior Year", an UY fanfic that's pretty well known to some people for it's epic length and scope that centres on several alien races and civilisations... And turns Ataru from a goofy lecher into a powerful Gary Stu. Well, it turns out that the writer of that infamous series is on the Anime Addventure site, and he's basically doing the same thing with all of the threads that he's writing...

Obnoxious Sentimental Princesses? Ataru becomes a girl, and becomes the most powerful of the Sailor Senshi, Sailor Earth.

The Doctor Is In? Ataru becomes a superhero who can apparently seduce anyone he pleases.

Faking It - Great Guardians? Ataru has the Saikou Jinseijitsu from the "Senior Year" series, which makes him the most powerful person on the planet and a twin sister. Oh, and he becomes a girl, too.

Totally Alone? The entire casts of Ranma 1/2 and UY are killed except for Ataru and Ranma, but they get female clones to act as love interests!

I find it fascinating that almost all of these threads share the same common theme: Ataru or Ranma have their entire personalities changes, so they can leave their previous relationships and rivalries behind and just become better than the canon characters. Basically, they become gigantic Gary Stus all the time, treating most of their canonical friends or enemies with either utter, outright hatred, to the point of several injuring them any chance they get or just plain condescension and looking down on them.

But the one thing I hate about this guy? Endless, endless, endless exposition! In practically all of his posts, people do nothing but sit around and talk. They talking about this, they talk about that... In his latest thread, Great Guardians, they've made mention of what could be a massive antagonist in the shape of the Lum-worshipping Niphentaxians (his own creation), and all we know of them is what the characters say about them. And considering that most of the fight scenes are of them squashing other canon characters, I fear they'd just be targets for the Marty Stus to destroy effortlessly.

The Anime Addventure however, gives readers the ability to write their own episodes to threads written by other people. I have to say, I tempts me quite a bit to rain on this guy's Stu parade...

On and off I've been flicking though the infamous Urusei Yatsura: The Senior Year, the fanfic series that so overshadowed Urusei Yatsura fanfic back in the day, that had Sean Gaffney writing for it, and having heard so much about it on and off through my early days on the internet... and I have to wonder... What did people see in this stuff?!

When I started reading the series, there was something off in the character. But in the second or third chapter, where Ataru finds himself locked in a torture chamber, practically all the elements of the original UY are quickly chiselled away and disposed of... Ataru becomes moody, bitchy and downright vicious in some places, shouting at everybody who even gives him an amount of backsass and then starts bashing people's heads in. He gets a girlfriend who has utter contempt for all the canon characters, and says things that would get a canon character in deep trouble. And then his (not mentioned) grandma is revealed to be a half-alien who looks like she's barely out of her 20s, and can authorise the complete wiping out of planetary civilisations if she (or her grandson) wills it. His uncle controls a powerful financial firm that is able to freeze Mendou's assets so he can't even sneeze in Ataru's direction without trouble. And then he gets a Cyborg form that basically resembles the Cyborg Superman, and uses it to practically hospitalise Lum's Stormtroopers. This is just the first seven or eight chapters.

And thanks to the writers having a complete and comprehensive character guide that comes with the series, I know that Ataru becomes the leader/living god of a race of genetically engineered Amazon women who had been wandering in space before he came along, and becomes a paragon of virtue and a feared general.

And that according to the writers, this is apparently supposed to be Lum's growing up story. In fact, her story arc seems to be more like her seeing everything in her life she uses to keep Ataru in line being methodically destroyed by him and his super powerful famiily, and her being emotionally broken to become Ataru's adoring slave.

Urgh. I suppose this looks like something for the <lj user="marysues"> community sometime soon. They already have the Sailor Twins there, anyway...

I'm having another go at the diet thing again. I've been trying my hand at it a bit, and I'm currently about 20 pounds down from when I started. Since I'm going to Japan and my travel agent was concerned I wouldn't be able to fly if an economy seat doesn't fit me, I really have to get serious about it for this week.

This is made a bit difficult because I've just gotten the brief for my resit assignments for uni. Two of them I can handle easily, but the third... A 10 minute audio documentary?! With interviews from contributors?! That, by all intents and purposes, you have to do yourself?! God, that'll put a dent in my holiday plans!

Also, I've learned that Sainsbury's Be Good to Yourself Lasagna isn't all that good to me.

Also, I've put up a few prompts for the femslash100 prompt battle that's been going on. Guess which series I've been putting up prompts for. Or which pairing I've put up prompts for.

So I've been writing a bit recently...

The two things I really like about the Anime Addventure is that, first of all, you don't really need much impetus to bang something out than usual with fanfic writing, because when you decide to write an episode, the previous writers (in this case, I'm apparently following on from the infamous Fred Herriot) supply the plot and characters for you. And second being that the whole nature of it is that you can take plots and make them conform to your own ways.

But looking back on this last entry I can't help but feel that my prose needs a bit of tightening up. Maybe I should be reading more prose books...
